Through the years the Smith County Master Gardeners have had events and projects which produce income in support of the needs of the association. One of the primary uses of these funds have been for scholarships which support horticulture students at two state universities.

Texas A & M University – College Station

The 2011 Smith County Master Gardeners scholarship was awarded to Laura White. In her thank you note, Laura said, “I am pleased to inform you that this summer I will be interning in Guatemala and teaching from the Junior Master Gardener’s curriculum in schools and orphanages.  As a horticulture major with an emphasis in socio-horticulture, I understand the impact plants can have on many aspects of a child’s life, and I look forward to sharing my knowledge. Once again, thank you for helping fund my ongoing education.”

Stephen F. Austin State University – Nacogdoches

The 2011 & 2012 scholarship committee has awarded the SCMG scholarship to Casey Thomas.  She will be a senior horticulture major in the fall and is currently working as a student assistant at the SFA Mast Arboretum.  In her thank you note Casey said, “I love my job and feel as though I am making a difference by helping our gardens grow. As for as my classes go, I enjoy the new courses and actually want to wake up and go to classes in the morning.”
